Gosford Castle

The moment you spot Gosford Castle rising above the Armagh countryside, you'll understand why it's been stopping people in their tracks since 1818. This isn't some crumbling medieval ruin - it's a properly preserved Norman Revival fortress, all crenellations and solid grey stone, built by the Acheson family as a statement of their wealth and power. You get to walk right up to it and explore the grounds at your own pace, which is a genuine treat for anyone who likes architecture without the ropes and velvet cords.

The castle itself sits within concentric earthwork fortifications - that's the impressive bit architecturally. The exterior is grand enough to keep history buffs interested for a good hour or so, and the grounds are spacious enough that children won't be climbing the walls after ten minutes. It's free to visit, which in Northern Ireland is increasingly rare for anything this substantial.

Markethill is just down the road, so you can easily tie this in with a wider exploration of Armagh's countryside. If you're based at Tepee Valley Campsite nearby - which comes with seriously strong reviews - this makes an excellent morning outing before heading out on a longer walk. It's not going to consume your entire day, but it's absolutely worth the detour if you're in the area. The setting itself, rolling farmland and all, is rather lovely on a clear day.
