Goosehill Camp.

The earthworks at Goosehill Camp sit quietly on Hampshire chalk downland, easy to miss if you're not looking for them. What you're actually standing on are the remains of an Iron Age hillfort - low banks and ditches that have somehow survived two thousand years of ploughing and neglect. It's not dramatic like Maiden Castle or Old Sarum. There's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards, no one charging you entry. Just you and some bumps in the ground that once enclosed a community.

Walkers get the most from this one. The site itself takes perhaps twenty minutes to wander round and make sense of, but it sits on decent walking country near Chichester, so you could easily build it into a longer loop. Archaeology enthusiasts might spend longer picking over the layout, trying to imagine the roundhouses and livestock pens. Families with young kids would probably find it underwhelming unless they're already keen on Iron Age Britain - there's nothing to climb on or explore in the traditional sense.

The real appeal is the context. If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Bow Hill Farm is just 1.4 miles away - Goosehill makes a decent morning's diversion before moving on to something with more visual punch. It costs nothing and takes no real time, which means you can visit on a whim. Go when the grass is short and you can read the banks properly. Winter or early spring works well. Don't expect a destination on its own. Think of it as a pleasant footnote to a downland walk.
