Goosard Batch Nature Reserve

The woodland walking tracks at Goosard Batch bring you into a proper slice of Somerset countryside, just beyond the charming village of Mells. This nature reserve sits on the higher ground that defines this corner of the Mendip fringe, and the views back across the valley are genuinely worth the effort.

What you're doing here is straightforward: walking through mixed woodland and open grassland, keeping an eye out for birds, insects, and the occasional deer if you're lucky. The reserve isn't a manicured attraction with visitor centres and car parks - it's a working conservation area, which is precisely why it feels authentic. The tree-lined paths can get muddy after rain, so proper boots are a good shout.

Walkers will get the most from Goosard Batch, particularly those doing a wider Mendips ramble. It's not the sort of place to drag restless kids to for a couple of hours - you need genuine interest in birdwatching or woodland ecology to keep you engaged.
