Golden Valley Light Railway

The Golden Valley Light Railway sits just outside Alfreton and offers a proper slice of railway nostalgia without the usual tourist circus. It's a working heritage line where you can actually ride vintage carriages pulled by steam and diesel locomotives - not just gawk at them from behind a rope. The volunteers here know their stuff, and they'll happily chat about the restoration work while you're waiting to board.

You'll spend a decent afternoon here if you're genuinely interested in railways. The actual journey isn't long, but there's enough to see on the line itself - the countryside rolls past reasonably well. The museum buildings house the usual collection of old signalling equipment and railway memorabilia, which ranges from genuinely fascinating to a bit dusty depending on your tolerance for technical detail. Kids often enjoy the ride itself more than the standing-around bits, so don't expect them to be glued to explanatory panels.

If you're staying at Golden Valley Caravan and Camping Park or Riddings Wood, both within walking distance, this works as a half-day outing. The Firs Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite is further afield but still reasonable. Check opening hours before you go - heritage railways often run weekends only, sometimes less in winter. Admission fees are modest for a ride, and it's worth it if railways genuinely interest you. Worth a go if you're in the area, though probably not a reason to plan a whole trip around.
