Golden Hill

Golden Hill is a proper fell walk rather than a manicured tourist trap, and that's exactly why it's worth doing. Perched above the A590 corridor between Windermere and Newby Bridge, it's the sort of peak that rewards a steep half-hour scramble with views that punch well above its modest 287-metre height. On a clear day you can see right across to the Coniston Fells and down the length of Windermere itself.

The walk suits anyone with reasonable fitness and a head for heights - it's not technical, just relentlessly uphill through bracken and rough grass. Kids aged ten-plus who enjoy a challenge will get something from it; younger ones might find the grind tedious. Walkers looking for a quick leg-stretcher between park activities will love how accessible it is from Newby Bridge Country Caravan Park or Hill of Oaks, both just 1.6 miles away.

There's nothing up top except the trig point and the views, which some find liberating and others slightly underwhelming given the effort. No café, no facilities, no drama. You're looking at roughly two hours round trip including a proper breather at the summit. Go early or midweek to dodge the school groups and fell runners who've cottoned on to how quick it is.

It fits neatly into a Lake District caravan holiday as a morning stomp before heading to Park Cliffe or one of the Windermere-side parks for the afternoon. Free, straightforward, and genuinely worth the calf burn.
