Golden Grove - Gelli Aur

The River Towy cuts through this corner of Carmarthenshire like it's got somewhere to be, and Golden Grove sits right on its banks with woodland climbing steeply on either side. It's a proper nature reserve - the kind where you actually feel like you've stepped away rather than just walked fifty yards from the car park. You're looking at mixed woodland, riverside paths, and the sort of quiet that makes you remember why you came to Wales in the first place.

Walkers will find their feet here. The terrain isn't brutal, but it's not a flat stroll either - there's enough gradient to feel like proper exercise without needing climbing gear. Birdwatchers get genuinely excited about this stretch of the Towy; the riverside habitat pulls in species you won't see in your back garden. Families with younger kids might manage an hour or so before the appeal of "more woodland" wears thin, but if you've got determined trampers aged ten and up, they'll happily spend an afternoon here.

It sits well with a Carmarthenshire holiday. You're only minutes from Llandeilo, which has cafes and a decent high street if you need to sort provisions, and several glamping spots like Ravenscroft Retreats and Gelli Glamping are within striking distance - two to three miles at most. The reserve itself appears to be free access, though it's worth checking locally as these things change. Allow a couple of hours minimum to do it justice. Best visited when the light's decent and you won't be trudging back to the car in full dark.
