Godmanchester Lock Great Ouse

The lock itself is fairly modest - a working waterway feature on the Great Ouse rather than some grand scenic spectacle. But that's rather the point. You're watching actual river traffic here, watching narrowboats and the occasional larger vessel negotiate their way through, which beats standing at a viewpoint taking photos of something inert.

It's about twenty minutes from Huntingdon town centre, and the walk down to the lock from the town is pleasant enough - you follow the river path and get a genuine sense of the Ouse's character rather than some manicured tourist route. The lock keeper's cottage gives it a lived-in feel. On a decent day, the towpath is busy with walkers and cyclists, which tells you something about its local appeal.

Who'd get the most from it? Families with younger kids will manage the short stroll easily, and there's something genuinely engaging about watching a boat pass through - far more interactive than most countryside attractions. Walkers doing the longer Great Ouse path will naturally pass through, and it's a decent waypoint to stop and get your bearings. History types less so - it's functional rather than ancient.

It's free, obviously, and you can spend as long as you like. Thirty minutes is plenty unless a boat's queuing. If you're based at Grafham Water Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite five miles away, this makes a solid afternoon walk - combine it with a pint in Huntingdon and you've got a proper half-day sorted.
