Goatee Shore

The New Forest's waterside at Goatee Shore is one of those spots where you can actually breathe. It's a proper picnic area on the edge of the forest near Ashurst, with enough space to spread out without feeling like you're camping on someone else's towel. The water here is calm and reflective - it's the sort of place where you'll genuinely want to sit for longer than planned.

What makes it work is the simplicity. There's a car park, tables, and views across the water to the forest beyond. Bring a packed lunch and settle in for an hour or three. Kids will find enough to occupy themselves - ducks, the occasional splash, room to run about without annoying anyone. The walking types will appreciate the access to broader New Forest trails from here, though the shore itself isn't a long walk.

Timing matters. Weekdays are infinitely more pleasant than weekends when the place fills up with families from across Hampshire. Early summer works well - warm enough to linger without the August crush. Winter has its own appeal if you don't mind the cold.

If you're staying at Ashurst Campsite, this is literally down the road - 2.7 miles and you're there. Matley Wood Campsite, further afield at 4 miles, also makes it a natural half-day excursion. It's not a destination in itself, but it's exactly what you need when you want to escape the campsite and eat your sandwiches beside water.
