Goat Hill

The name alone tells you what to expect - and Goat Hill, just outside Craven Arms, doesn't disappoint if you're after a proper walk with views. It's a modest peak by most standards, but that's rather the point. You get the satisfaction of a summit without needing specialist kit or half a day's graft.

The climb itself takes most people between 30 and 45 minutes depending on fitness and which route you fancy. From the top you can see across the Shropshire hills - on a clear day it's genuinely worth the effort, though I'll be honest, in poor weather it's just bracken and cloud. The actual peak isn't dramatically high or dramatic, but it's a cracking spot for a flask and a sit-down if you've timed it right.

Families with kids aged seven or eight upwards will manage it without too much moaning, especially if you make a game of spotting the views. Older hikers treating it as a warm-up walk before tackling something more serious will find it fits nicely into a morning. It's the sort of place you pass on your way to somewhere else and think "might as well" - and you won't regret it.
