Go Ape Matfen

The first time you swing between the treetops at Go Ape Matfen, you'll understand why families keep coming back. It's a proper outdoor adventure park - think zip lines, rope courses, and suspended walkways strung through the woodland canopy just north of Newcastle. You're clipped into harnesses the whole time, which means even nervous climbers tend to have a go at it.

The site works well for families with kids aged about eight upwards, though they've got easier courses for younger ones too. Adults? You'll feel the burn, especially on the upper-level challenges. Expect to spend two to three hours working your way through the obstacles - it's not a dash-in-dash-out sort of place. The beauty is you can pick your own pace; nobody's rushing you along.

Timing matters here. Go on a school day during term time and you'll avoid the weekend crush. Weather-wise, it's fine in light rain but they close if it's properly biblical, so check before you head over.

Northumberland Nook is a bit further out but still within easy striking distance. The park gives you proper value if you've got energetic kids who need tiring out, though it's not cheap and you'll want to budget accordingly.
