GLOBAL VILLAGE SHOP

The Global Village Shop in Elland is one of those places that catches you off guard. Walk in expecting a gift shop and you'll find yourself standing in front of work by artists and makers from across the world - textiles, ceramics, jewellery, and sculptures that genuinely look like they belong in a proper gallery, not squirreled away in West Yorkshire.

It's part retail space, part exhibition, which makes it feel less like a transaction and more like browsing someone's carefully curated travels. The quality varies - some pieces are extraordinary, others less so - but the interesting thing is that nothing here is mass-produced tat. Even the smaller items carry real craft.

Families with older kids who can appreciate handmade work will find it engaging for twenty minutes or so. Serious collectors and textile enthusiasts could easily spend an hour. It's the sort of place where you might actually leave with something unusual rather than the usual seaside tat.

Elland itself isn't a destination town, but if you're based at Elland Hall Farm Caravan Park - which is excellent, by the way, just five-minute drive from here - the Global Village Shop makes a decent rainy-day sortie or a break between walks. It's free to look around, though obviously the real fun is in buying something. Allow half an hour unless you're genuinely interested in the work, in which case stay longer.
