Glentoo Loch

The water here is properly still on calm days, reflecting the moorland hills like a dark mirror. Glentoo Loch sits about three miles northwest of Castle Douglas, a modest body of water that doesn't grab headlines but rewards a quiet visit if you're staying in the area.

It's a straightforward walk around the shore - nothing dramatic, no scrambling required. You'll find mostly natural woodland framing the water, and it's the sort of place where you notice small things: dragonflies in summer, the occasional heron, the particular silence that Scottish lochs seem to hold. The walk takes perhaps ninety minutes at a leisurely pace, and there's rarely a crowd, which is its own kind of appeal.

Families with younger children might find it a touch dull after half an hour - there's no café, no playground, no interpretive boards to break things up. But for walkers, for anyone after a gentle leg-stretch during a caravan holiday, it slots in nicely. Birdwatchers will get proper use from it.

The loch itself is free to access - there's limited parking near the water but nothing formal. Best visited on clearer days when the light actually makes the water worth looking at. In mist, it's just a grey shape.
