Glendoe Reservoir

Glendoe Reservoir sits high in the Highlands west of Inverness, a sprawling expanse of water that most tourists driving past actually miss entirely. It's proper remote - the kind of place you end up at by accident or deliberate purpose, and rarely both. The drive alone takes you through genuinely wild terrain, which sets expectations right from the start.

Once you're there, it's all about the water and the landscape. The reservoir stretches across moorland that looks almost lunar in certain lights, with hills rolling away endlessly. There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of - this is the real deal, not a packaged experience. Walkers get the most from it. The terrain rewards exploration, and on clear days the views over the water toward distant peaks justify the journey. Photography enthusiasts will find something worth stopping for at various angles around the shore.

You won't find crowds here. That's both the appeal and the limitation - it's genuinely peaceful, but there's not much to actually do beyond walk, look, and breathe in the Highland air. Kids might get restless unless they're the type who enjoy wild spaces. Allow an hour or two depending on how much you fancy walking.

If you're staying at Loch Ness Highland Resort just down the road, Glendoe makes a solid half-day excursion for a change of scenery. It's less famous than Loch Ness itself, which means significantly fewer people and a proper sense of solitude. Bring decent footwear and check the weather - exposure is real up here.
