Glen Willie

Glen Willie is a proper woodland walk just outside Carlisle, the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think. It's a modest forest - nothing dramatic, no waterfalls or crags - but that's rather the point. The trees are thick enough to feel properly sheltered, paths wind through without being overly manicured, and you get genuine peace without needing to drive three hours.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's the kind of spot for a two-hour loop rather than a full day out, making it ideal for families with younger kids or anyone after a gentle stretch of the legs. The forest floor is soft underfoot, and depending on season you'll see bluebells, ferns, or just good clean woodland. Don't come expecting panoramic views or dramatic photo opportunities - come because you want to be among trees.

The main thing is it slots in nicely with a caravan or glamping stay in the area. Englethwaite Hall is barely three miles away, Eden Valley Glamping even closer if you're after something fancier, so it works as a morning walk before heading elsewhere or an evening potter when you've had enough of the main attractions. Carlisle itself is near enough for supplies and lunch if needed.

Bring proper footwear - the ground can be boggy after rain - and don't expect facilities. There's no car park infrastructure signposted, so local knowledge or a good map is essential. Honestly, that's part of its charm. It's not curated for tourism, which means it feels like an actual place rather than a tick-box walk.
