Glen Isla Park

The River Isla cuts through this Aberdeenshire reserve like it's got somewhere important to be, and honestly, you'll want to keep pace with it. Glen Isla Park is a proper walk-through nature reserve near Blairgowrie where the Highlands start to show their teeth - steep wooded slopes, tumbling water, and the kind of quiet that makes you realise how much noise you carry around normally.

What you're doing here is walking. There's no café, no visitor centre, no facilities to speak of. You arrive, park up, and either head up the glen or stick to the easier riverside path depending on what your legs are telling you that day. Walkers and nature types will get the most from it - the birch and pine woodland is genuinely lovely, and if you're lucky you'll spot red squirrels or hear woodpeckers. Families with young kids might find it a bit limiting unless they're keen hikers; it's not a playground situation.

Allow two to three hours if you're doing a decent walk up the glen. The paths can be boggy in wet weather, so proper boots matter. Spring and early summer are best - the light's brilliant, midges haven't properly arrived, and the river's usually in good voice after snow melt.
