Giraffes

You won't expect to find giraffes in North Yorkshire, yet here they are. This unlikely landmark draws visitors curious about how African wildlife ended up in rural England - and it's the sort of thing that makes you stop the car and actually get out to look properly.

The giraffes themselves are the main draw, and if you're travelling with children who've never seen one outside a zoo, they'll find it genuinely thrilling. The animals are visible from the roadside, though the experience depends entirely on whether they're in the mood to amble into view or prefer to stay in the shade. Some days you'll get a decent look; other times you'll squint at a distant shape and hope it's what you came for.

It's free to stop and look, which is the honest truth of it - no entrance fees, no gift shop, no facilities. Allow five minutes, maybe ten if the giraffes cooperate. Timing doesn't matter much since they're there year-round, though visiting in cooler months might make them more active.
