Gill Hill

The climb up Gill Hill takes about an hour from the car park, and it's genuinely worth the effort. You're not looking at anything dramatic here - it's Scottish Lowlands, not the Highlands - but the views across Ayrshire once you're at the top are proper extensive. On a clear day you can see right across to the coast, which makes the modest 400-odd metres feel like you've earned something.

It's the sort of walk that suits families with older kids or anyone after a straightforward afternoon ramble without needing to commit to full mountaineering. The path itself is manageable, though it gets a bit boggy in places so waterproof boots are sensible. Walkers will appreciate the moorland plateau at the summit - there's something quite meditative about the emptiness up there.

The real draw is that it doesn't feel touristy. You won't find crowds queuing for photos. If you're staying at Parkdean Resorts Sandylands Holiday Park just down the road, this makes an excellent half-day outing when the weather cooperates. Allow two to three hours total including the descent, which can be trickier than the way up if you're not careful on the loose ground.

Go in summer or early autumn when the heather's showing. Winter turns it into a different proposition - visibility drops and the ground becomes treacherous. It's free, obviously, and there's no formal visitor infrastructure, so take what you need with you.
