Gildimoors

The forest sprawls across moorland on the Powys side of the border, a proper wild stretch of woodland that doesn't try to be anything it isn't. You're looking at dense trees, open rides through the canopy, and the sort of quiet that makes you remember why you bothered leaving the caravan in the first place.

This is walker territory, first and foremost. The terrain's not brutal, but it's not a stroll either - expect uneven ground, the occasional boggy patch, and paths that disappear if you're not paying attention. You'll want proper footwear. The forest works well for families with older kids who can handle a decent hike without whinging; younger ones might find it a bit relentless after the first couple of miles.

History types will get less out of this than outdoor people. There's no visitor centre, no signage to speak of, no facilities beyond what you bring yourself. It's free access, though, and that's rather the point - you come here to walk, breathe forest air, and maybe spot something interesting in the trees. Late spring through early autumn are the best bets, when the ground's driest and the light's decent under the canopy.

From Oswestry it's a straightforward drive south into Mid Wales. If you're based at Cranberry Moss or any of the nearby caravan parks, this works as a proper half-day or full-day activity. Pair it with a look at the market town itself and you've got a solid day sorted. Gildimoors won't thrill you, but it'll give you what you came for - uncluttered woodland and space to think.
