Genesis sits right on Nottingham's doorstep as a contemporary art gallery that takes itself seriously without the stuffiness you might expect. The space itself is clean and modern - white walls, decent lighting, the kind of place where you can actually see what's on display rather than squinting at a painting in shadow.

What you're getting here depends entirely on what's showing when you visit. It's not a permanent collection in the traditional sense; Genesis runs rotating exhibitions across painting, sculpture, photography and mixed media. Some shows land better than others, as is always the case with contemporary spaces. The gallery's compact enough that you won't be wandering around for hours - realistic to say you'll spend 45 minutes to an hour here, depending on how much you actually engage with the work.

This works well for art-minded types rather than casual browsers. If you're camping at Holme Pierrepont Campsite or one of the other caravan parks dotted around the outskirts - and there's a decent cluster of them within a couple of miles - you could easily slot Genesis into a Nottingham day trip without it feeling like a slog. Pair it with a proper walk along the Trent or a mooch around Nottingham town centre proper, and you've got a solid afternoon.

Frankly, it's worth a look if you're already in the area, though it's not the sort of place that warrants a special journey on its own. Pop in if contemporary art is your thing; skip it if you're expecting blockbuster exhibitions.
