Generator Projects sits in a converted Victorian villa just outside Tayport, and it's the sort of place that catches you off guard. What you're walking into isn't your typical stuffy gallery - it's a working space where contemporary artists actually make things, exhibit work, and occasionally let visitors in to watch the chaos unfold. The building itself has proper bones, high ceilings and decent light, which they've filled with rotating exhibitions that tend toward installation, sculpture, and experimental practice rather than safe wall-hanging fare.

The crowd it attracts is obvious enough: artists, design types, anyone curious about what's happening beyond the mainstream gallery circuit. You'll spend maybe 45 minutes here unless you get talking to someone about their practice, in which case you could easily double that. The Thursday to Sunday opening (12:00-17:00) means it's worth planning ahead, and parking in Tayport itself can be tight on weekends.

Free entry, though donations are clearly welcome and actually make sense when you see how lean these operations typically run. It works brilliantly as part of a Fife coast loop - pair it with Tayport Links Caravan Park or Larick Campsite (both rated exceptionally well) and you've got a solid cultural stop between longer park days. Not one for people after big names or obvious Instagram moments, but if you're genuinely interested in how contemporary art actually gets made in Britain, this is worth the detour.
