General's Copse

Walking into General's Copse feels like stepping into someone's private woodland - all dappled light and the kind of quiet you don't get near Faringdon itself. It's a proper forest rather than a manicured nature reserve, with mature trees creating a decent canopy and enough space to actually lose the crowds, which is rare this close to town.

The woodland floor is thick with leaf litter and the paths wind through without much fanfare - no information boards or marked trails that I could find, which means you're exploring rather than being shepherded along a set route. That works brilliantly if you like a bit of foraging atmosphere or just want somewhere to stretch your legs properly. Kids usually enjoy the freedom to wander and poke about in the undergrowth, though there's nothing specifically engineered for entertainment here.

You're looking at a solid forty minutes to an hour if you want to loop through without rushing. No admission charge that I'm aware of - it's open access woodland. Go on a weekday morning and you'll likely have it to yourself.

If you're based at Faringdon Grange just down the road, this is a five-minute walk and genuinely better than hoofing into town. The Real Campsite, three miles out, makes it worth planning as part of a morning's exploring. Good for walkers who want something low-key and atmospheric without the gift shop experience.
