National Trust - The Buscot and Coleshill Estates

Two estates, two very different reasons to visit. The Buscot and Coleshill Estates sit just outside Faringdon and offer something rarely seen together - a proper stately home experience combined with genuine working farmland and woodland. Buscot House itself is the draw for most: a Victorian pile with an exceptional art collection that genuinely surprises. The Pre-Raphaelite paintings are the headline act, but it's the furniture and decorative arts that stay with you.

Coleshill, across the way, is altogether wilder. These are working estates, not museum pieces. You'll find woodland walks, farm buildings, and the kind of landscape that hasn't been manicured for Instagram. Families with keen walkers will get far more from Coleshill than those after a quick stroll round a gift shop. The house itself demands a proper visit - an hour minimum if you're reading everything.

Timing matters here. Spring brings the grounds alive, though winter has its own appeal when the crowds thin out. Check ahead for opening days - the National Trust sites round here don't run seven days a week. Faringdon itself is a pleasant enough base, but honestly, Great Farm or The Real Campsite, both within easy reach, make better camping stops if you're mixing this with the broader Cotswolds itinerary. Both parks sit within striking distance for a day trip without feeling rushed.

Worth the detour if you're serious about Victorian art or countryside history. Not one for a quick photo and a coffee.
