Geal Chàrn

The walk up Geal Chàrn from Newtonmore isn't particularly famous, which is half its charm. You're climbing a Munro that most hill-baggers tackle as part of a bigger day, but it rewards you properly if you make the effort.

Starting near Newtonmore, the path takes you through proper Highland terrain - moorland, some boggy bits if it's wet (and it often is), and gradually up through the hills. The summit sits at 811 metres and the views sweep across the Grampians. On a clear day you can pick out other peaks stacked against the horizon like teeth. The ascent is steady rather than brutal, taking most people three to four hours for the round trip.

This is a walker's hill, pure and simple. Families with teenagers will manage it fine; younger kids might find the moorland slog a bit dull. Don't expect a dramatic rocky scramble or a crowd. The appeal is the solitude and the walking itself - that meditative rhythm of one foot in front of the other across the Scottish hills.

Go in decent weather or don't bother. Cloud cover turns it into a grim trudge with no views. Summer and early autumn are solid bets. If you're staying at Laggan Glamping nearby, you could make this a lazy morning start, be back for late lunch. It slots well into a broader peak-bagging trip - plenty of bigger names around to keep you occupied across a week.
