Gateside Plantation

Gateside Plantation is a sprawling forest that catches most people off guard - it's proper woodland in the proper sense, not some manicured country estate walk. You're looking at dense mixed forest that'll swallow you up for an afternoon if you let it. The trees tower overhead, there's actual shade even in summer, and the paths wind through in ways that feel genuinely exploratory rather than prescribed.

Walkers will get the most from this. Bring decent boots because it's not a flat stroll - there are gentle climbs and the ground's uneven enough to keep you concentrating. You can easily spend two to three hours threading through different sections, and the further you venture from the car park, the quieter it becomes. Families with kids old enough to handle a proper walk (say, eight upwards) will enjoy it too, though younger ones might struggle with the pace.

It's free to enter, which is why it's worth the minor detour if you're based near Sanquhar. The plantation sits close enough to Sunnyside Lodges that you could easily combine it with a park stay - perfect for using up energy before settling in for the evening.

Timing-wise, go early morning or late afternoon in decent weather. Rain makes it muddy and atmospheric in equal measure, so it depends what you're after.
