Garfield Mill

The old mill building just outside Hawick has been converted into a working gallery space, and it's one of those places that rewards actually stepping inside rather than just driving past. The converted industrial space works surprisingly well for art - high ceilings, decent natural light from the tall windows, and enough room to breathe between pieces.

What you'll find depends on what's on when you visit, as it hosts rotating exhibitions from regional and visiting artists. It's the sort of gallery where you might spend twenty minutes or forty depending on what's caught your eye. Not massive, not pretentious. If you're into contemporary work or local artists, it's absolutely worth the detour from Hawick town centre. For families, it works if your kids are old enough to look without touching - there's not really interactive stuff here.

The setting itself is the real draw. Being in a former mill gives the whole experience something a bit different from a white-box gallery in town. You get a real sense of place.

Practically speaking, I'd ring ahead or check their social media before heading out - opening hours and what's on can shift, and you want to make sure there's an exhibition you fancy before making the journey. It pairs well with staying at nearby Stouslie Snugs if you're doing a Scottish Borders break, especially if you want something quieter than staying in Hawick itself.
