Garden Plantation

You'll find yourself walking beneath towering conifers and deciduous trees that create a proper cathedral of green. Garden Plantation is a forest spread across Cumbria, just a short drive from Carlisle, where the canopy does a decent job of blocking out the world. It's the sort of place where an afternoon disappears without you noticing.

Walking trails cut through the woodland, and the appeal is straightforward - peaceful, quiet, good for stretching your legs. You won't find manicured gardens or visitor centres here. This is genuine forest, the kind where you hear birds rather than car engines. Families with young walkers will manage fine on flatter sections, though it does get a bit muddy after rain, so proper footwear matters.

Histor buffs might find it less compelling than heritage sites, but for anyone after a proper woodland walk without the crowds you get at Whinlatter or similar, it delivers. The light filtering through the trees is genuinely lovely in late afternoon. Allow a couple of hours if you're ambling, less if you're just after a quick stomp.
