Ganderdown Wood

You'll find yourself among proper old-growth woodland the moment you step into Ganderdown Wood, just outside Alresford in Hampshire. The trees here are genuinely substantial - oak and beech mostly - with a canopy thick enough that you're never quite sure what time of day it is. Paths wind through without much fanfare, which is rather the point.

It's the kind of place walkers actually use rather than photograph. No visitor centre, no signage telling you what tree is what. Just woodland doing what it's done for centuries. You can lose an hour here easily, though two is probably the sweet spot before it starts feeling a bit samey. Families with young children who like splashing through streams will have decent fun, though there's nothing to pin them to a specific route - you make your own way.

Timing-wise, spring brings bluebells in decent numbers if you catch it right, and autumn when the light comes through the canopy is genuinely lovely. Winter's wet and muddy, as you'd expect. The wood sits conveniently close to Beechen Glamping and The Spinney Caravan Park - both within five miles - making it an easy morning walk from a weekend pitch. It's not dramatic or Instagram-worthy. That's exactly why it works. No crowds, no entrance fee to worry about, no obligation to stay longer than feels right.
