Gallox hill fort

There's not much left of Gallox Hill Fort, to be honest. What you're looking at is an Iron Age hillfort that's been flattened by 2,000 years of weather and farming, sitting just outside Minehead on the Somerset coast. The earthworks are still visible if you know what you're looking for - a circular ditch and bank arrangement that once enclosed a settlement - but you won't find dramatic stone walls or reconstructed gates. It's the sort of place that rewards a bit of historical imagination.

The walk up is straightforward enough, and from the top you get decent views across towards the Bristol Channel. If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Minehead Caravan and Motorhome Club is closest at under two miles - it's a logical morning ramble before heading into town. Walkers will get more out of it than casual tourists. Families with young children might find twenty minutes feels like enough once they've clambered the slopes and looked at what amounts to lumps in a field.

There's no visitor centre, no facilities, no admission charge. It's free and accessible, which is the main point. The best time to visit is late spring or early autumn when the grass is manageable and you're not fighting through summer mud or winter waterlogging. Don't expect a major attraction - think of it as a worthwhile detour if you're exploring the Minehead area rather than a reason to plan a whole trip around it.
