Conygar Wood

The woodland walk up Conygar Wood from Minehead is one of those proper local finds that doesn't bang on about itself. You're essentially walking through dense forest on the edge of town, climbing steadily uphill through beech and oak until the trees open out and you get views across the Somerset coast. It's not a leisurely stroll - the incline is genuine - but it's only about half an hour to the top if you're moving at a decent pace.

Walkers will get the most from this one. The path is well-worn and straightforward enough, though it can be muddy after rain. You won't find themed attractions or facilities, just trees, fresh air, and a genuine sense of having earned the view. Families with older kids who don't mind a bit of uphill work will be fine; the under-eights might start grumbling halfway up.

It's free to access and works well as a morning break if you're staying at Butlins Minehead or any of the caravan parks within a mile or two of town. The walk itself takes ninety minutes there and back at a comfortable pace. Autumn is best - the woodland's gold and brown feel proper atmospheric. Summer can be sticky, and the flies are relentless.

Pair it with the seafront at Minehead itself for a half-day out. You won't spend hours here, but it's the kind of walk you'll remember because it feels real rather than packaged.
