Gallox Bridge

The stone arch spanning the River Avill just outside Minehead is one of Somerset's most photographed bridges, and once you're standing on it, you understand why. Gallox Bridge dates back to the 13th century - that's proper old - and the craftsmanship in those arches still holds firm after all these centuries. It's a short walk from Minehead town centre, maybe ten minutes on foot, making it an easy detour whether you're staying at Butlins Minehead or one of the caravan parks dotted along the coast.

What you actually do here is stand and admire it, really. Take a photo, maybe peer down at the water below, read the history plaque if there is one. It's not a destination you'll spend two hours at - more a proper little landmark that rewards the brief walk. The bridge itself is narrow and characterful, with the river creating a lovely backdrop, especially in afternoon light. It works best as part of a coastal walk rather than a standalone trip.

Families with younger kids might find it underwhelming on its own, but walkers heading along the Exmoor paths will pass it naturally. The real value is in the setting - combine it with a stroll through Minehead itself or a longer hike toward Dunster, and you've got something worthwhile. Free to visit, obviously, and accessible year-round. Worth the detour if you're already in the area staying at one of the local holiday parks, but it's not the sort of place you'd drive across Somerset specially to see.
