Gallipoli 1915

The trenches at Gallipoli 1915 near Burton-on-Trent are a sobering recreation of the famous WWI landing site, built to scale and painstakingly accurate. You walk through reconstructed dugouts and communication trenches that give a real sense of how cramped and miserable conditions actually were - far better than reading about it in a textbook.

It's primarily for history buffs and school groups, though families with older kids (10+) often find it genuinely moving rather than just educational. You'll spend a good two to three hours here if you're thorough, reading the interpretive panels and taking in the layout. The site does an excellent job of conveying what the soldiers faced without being gratuitous about it.

If you're staying at Kingfisher Holiday Park just down the road, this makes for a proper morning or afternoon outing. It's the kind of place that sticks with you afterwards - not cheerful, but absolutely worth the visit if you care about that period of history. The setting in the Staffordshire countryside is peaceful now, which somehow makes the contrast even more striking.
