Galgorm Castle

The ruins sprawl across a grassy slope near Ballymena, and you'll know Galgorm Castle from a distance by its distinctive tower - what's left of it, anyway. Built in the 17th century, it's one of those fortified manor houses that dotted Ulster, though time and weather have had their way with most of the structure. What remains is atmospheric rather than grand: a sturdy keep, some walls that still command respect, and the kind of quiet that makes you actually listen.

Walking the grounds takes perhaps twenty minutes if you're ambling, less if you're just grabbing photos. There's no visitor centre or gift shop - it's a proper ruin, free to wander, with no fussing about. History buffs will recognise the architectural bones; families with younger kids might find it a bit underwhelming after the initial five minutes, if I'm honest. Older children and serious castle hunters, though, will appreciate how you can actually move through the spaces and imagine the place functioning.

The location works well alongside a Sunset Glamping stay just down the road - close enough for a morning walk without feeling like a chore, different enough from manicured heritage sites to break up a park holiday. It's not dramatic or Instagram-famous, but it's real, free, and worth thirty minutes if you're in the area. Spring's best: the grounds aren't waterlogged, and the light does something proper nice to the stonework.
