Gairloch Beach

The beach at Gairloch curves away in both directions, golden sand giving way to darker shingle where the tide's been busy. It's the kind of Scottish beach that catches you off guard - proper wide, backed by low dunes rather than cliffs, and genuinely good for swimming if you're brave enough for the North Atlantic.

What makes it work is the access. There's a car park right there, and you can walk straight down without faffing about. Families tend to congregate near the pavilion end where there's a bit of shelter, but head left and you'll have stretches of sand to yourself even in summer. The water's cold - undeniably cold - but the beach itself rewards paddling, sandcastle work, and long walks hunting for sea glass.

You'll want at least two hours here, more if you're the type to settle in with a packed lunch and a book. The village of Gairloch itself sits just back from the strand, so a coffee run isn't complicated. If the weather's genuinely foul - and this is the Highlands, so it will be sometimes - the beach becomes more of a wild, windswept trudge than a lounging spot. Plan accordingly.

Sands Caravan & Camping sits three miles away, making it an easy base if you want to return for a hot shower and proper meal. The beach pairs well with exploring the quieter coastal walks around the area. It's not dramatic in the way some Scottish beaches are, but it's honest and works well for a proper beach day rather than a photo stop.
