A proper woodland walk tucked away near Stamford, G Spinney is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. It's a small forest fragment - nothing vast, but enough to feel genuinely removed from the A1 corridor that roars past nearby. The paths wind through decent-sized trees and you get that earthy, quiet feeling that makes a walk feel like an actual escape rather than a loop round a car park.

This works best for families wanting a leg-stretch between longer activities, or walkers who appreciate understated countryside. You'll find yourself alone most days, which is either brilliant or a bit eerie depending on your mood. The woodland floor is soft underfoot when it's not waterlogged, and there's genuine shade in summer - increasingly rare in the Midlands. Allow an hour maximum unless you're the type who stops to look at moss.

It sits well within a broader Northamptonshire park holiday. Rockingham Forest Park at Landal is only 4.4 miles away, so you could base yourself there and use G Spinney as a morning walk before heading to one of the proper attractions. Stamford Meadows Glamping is equally close if you want something posher. The town of Stamford itself is worth an hour - Georgian architecture, proper old-school market town - though that's a separate trip entirely.

Free to access, no facilities that I could find. Go midweek if you want genuine solitude. Rain makes it moodier but muddier.
