Fyvie Castle

The moment you turn down the tree-lined drive at Fyvie, you realise why this place has sat here for seven centuries. Scotland's largest castle by floor space, it sprawls across the Aberdeenshire countryside like something from a half-remembered dream - all granite turrets and weathered stone rising against grey skies.

You're walking through rooms that actually feel lived-in, not sterile. The Gun Room has real character, all dark wood and military oddities. The library is genuinely impressive if you care about old books - thousands of them lining the walls. The best bit? The dungeon. Yes, it's touristy, but there's something properly unsettling about descending into that medieval gloom.

This is absolutely for history types and castle enthusiasts. Families with younger kids might find it a bit heavy-going - there's not loads of interactive stuff, and it's easy to burn out on room after room of portraits and period furniture. Walkers, though, should come. The grounds are substantial, and you can spend a good half-day just wandering the policies.

Allow three to four hours if you're thorough, less if you're just hitting the main rooms. Turriff's only ten minutes away if you need supplies or lunch. If you're glamping at Bothie nearby, Fyvie makes an excellent afternoon excursion - grand enough to feel special, but close enough that you won't waste precious holiday time on driving.
