Fyfield Down

The walk up Fyfield Down rewards you with proper unobstructed views across the Wiltshire downlands - the sort of sweeping perspective that makes you understand why people fought over this landscape for thousands of years. It's essentially a chalk grassland hill with Bronze Age barrows dotted across the top, though you won't find much interpretation on site. What you get instead is silence, space, and the chance to see how the land actually lies.

From Marlborough, it's an easy drive out to the trailhead. The walk itself isn't demanding - most people manage the ascent in under twenty minutes depending on fitness - but the exposure means it catches the wind properly. Bring a jacket even when it looks calm from the car. The views work best in the morning light when the shadows give the ancient burial mounds their full character.

This suits walkers and history types more than families with restless young kids. There's no café, no facilities, no playground nonsense - just open downland and a few ancient monuments you can stand among. If you're based at Ridgeway Campsite or Hillview Park nearby, it's absolutely worth a morning detour. Combine it with a walk along the Ridgeway itself for a proper half-day out.
