Furzyland Wood

You'll find yourself in proper woodland the moment you step into Furzyland Wood, just outside Plymouth. It's the sort of place where the canopy closes in overhead and you can actually hear yourself think - rare enough these days. The trails wind through decent-sized trees, with enough variation to keep a walk interesting rather than just trudging the same old loop.

This is genuinely good for families with kids old enough to manage a woodland walk without needing a pram. The ground's uneven in places and there are roots to watch for, so toddlers might struggle. Walkers who know Devon will appreciate it as a proper break from the usual moorland - if you're staying at Hidden Hill or anywhere nearby and want a morning wander without driving miles, it does the job well. The wood's also decent for anyone who just wants an hour away from Plymouth's edges without faffing about with transport.

Timing-wise, allow an hour to ninety minutes depending on your pace and how many times you stop to look at things. It's best visited when it's not hammering with rain - the paths get muddy and less forgiving. Spring and early autumn are probably the sweet spot, when you're not melting and the place feels a bit less claustrophobic.

It's free to access and the nearest facilities are in or around Plymouth proper, so don't expect a visitor centre or café. Straightforward woodland, then. Not dramatic, but solid if you're after some greenery and a bit of peace.
