The woodland paths through Furzefield Wood, just outside Horsham, offer a proper escape from the Sussex commuter belt without demanding a full day's commitment. This is straightforward forest walking - mature trees, decent undergrowth, the occasional muddy stretch that makes you feel like you've actually been somewhere. The wood itself is small enough to explore thoroughly in under an hour, which suits families with younger legs or anyone after a quick breath of fresh air rather than a serious hike.

It works well as a stop-off if you're based at one of the nearby parks - Honeybridge Park is barely half a mile away, and Knepp Wildland Safaris just across the road if you're after something more ambitious. The walks are easy enough that you won't spend the whole time negotiating mud and tree roots, but substantial enough to feel restorative. Spring's probably loveliest here when the woodland floor comes alive, though autumn brings decent light through the canopy.

The main drawback is that there's not an enormous amount to do once you've walked the paths - no viewpoint at the end, no dramatic clearing, no café waiting at the finish. It's purely about the walk itself. That said, if you're camping locally and want a morning wander before heading to Horsham or further afield, this delivers without fuss. Kids who genuinely enjoy being in the woods will find it engaging; those after playground-style entertainment will get bored quickly. Go in with the right expectations and it's a solid fifteen-minute drive from most of the local parks.
