Fulscot Copse

A proper woodland walk through Oxfordshire countryside, Fulscot Copse sits just outside Wallingford and delivers exactly what you'd hope for - mature trees, quiet paths, and the sort of peace that makes you forget the A4130 exists nearby. The forest floor is thick with leaf litter, especially come autumn, and there's a genuine sense of being away from things despite the proximity to town.

It's the kind of place that rewards a slow meander rather than a brisk march through. Bring binoculars if you're into spotting birds - the mix of oak and beech creates decent habitat - and don't expect dramatic views or facilities. There's a car park area and some established trails, but this is woodland for its own sake, not a destination with a tearoom and gift shop tacked on.

Walkers will get the most from it, particularly those after a two-hour loop without too much elevation change. Young kids might find it a touch dull unless they're the type to spend an hour hunting for bugs and sticks, which, fair play, is exactly what a wood is for. Spring is lovely when the bluebells come through, though the place is pleasant enough year-round.

If you're based at Bridge Villa Camping just up the road, this is a cracking spot for a morning walk before breakfast. Benson Waterfront visitors are a shade further out but still within easy reach. Nothing fancy, but that's rather the point.
