Fullbridge Church

The River Blackwater cuts through Maldon, and on its eastern bank stands Fullbridge Church - a proper old Essex building that most visitors heading to Mill Beach or Osea Leisure Park completely miss. It's worth stopping for, though, especially if you've got an hour to kill between holiday park activities.

The church itself is medieval, which means the stonework's genuinely ancient and the interior has that particular smell - damp plaster, old wood, centuries of candle wax. You can walk right in most days. There's nothing wildly showy about it, but that's rather the point. It's the kind of place where you get a real sense of what village life actually looked like centuries back, not some polished heritage experience.

Historically minded visitors will find it interesting, though you won't need more than thirty minutes inside unless you're genuinely into medieval church architecture. Families with young kids might find it a bit quiet, but older children who've been dragged round a few abbeys already won't mind it. It's free to visit, which helps the decision-making.

The real selling point is location. You're right here on the Blackwater, so combine it with a walk along the riverbank before heading back to your caravan at Mill Beach or Osea. The town of Maldon itself is immediately adjacent - grab lunch, stretch your legs properly, then swing by the church. On a blue-sky day the light through the old windows is genuinely lovely.
