Frowde Christmas Tree

Head out of Taunton towards the Somerset countryside and you'll find yourself at Frowde Christmas Tree, a nature reserve that's genuinely worth a detour if you're after something quieter than the usual tourist circuit. It's the sort of place that rewards a slow walk - proper woodland with real character, the kind where you actually notice things.

The reserve centres around a rather magnificent Christmas tree (hence the name), but what makes it special is the broader habitat. You get decent woodland walking through native trees, with enough space to feel properly away from it all without needing to trek for hours. Birdwatchers tend to get the most from it - the tree cover draws various species throughout the year, and locals swear by it for spotting things you won't see in more manicured spaces.

It's free to access and works brilliantly as a half-day stop if you're staying at Middle Stone Farm Glamping nearby. Allow an hour or two depending on how keen you are on the walking side. There's nothing fancy here - no visitor centre, no café - which is rather the point. Bring decent boots if it's been wet; the ground can get muddy.

Timing-wise, spring and autumn are exceptional for both the woodland feel and the wildlife activity. Summer's lovely for a family stroll, though it can get a bit overgrown. Winter reveals the structure of the place better, and yes, the Christmas tree itself is genuinely atmospheric come December if you fancy tracking down a proper woodland tradition.
