Froghall Wharf

The Froghall Wharf sits along the Caldon Canal, a proper slice of industrial heritage that feels a world away from Stoke-on-Trent's bustle despite being barely on its doorstep. What you get here is a working waterway with character - narrowboats moored alongside, the old wharf structures still standing, and genuine towpath walks that actually lead somewhere interesting rather than just looping back on themselves.

It's not a destination that'll keep you occupied for half a day, but that's rather the point. An hour or so poking around, watching the boats, maybe grabbing a coffee if there's a cafe open that day, and you've got the full picture. History buffs will appreciate the industrial stonework and the canal's role in moving Potteries goods. Families with younger kids might find it a bit quiet - there's no playground or attractions as such, just water and towpath.

The real value is as a bolt-on to a caravan park stay. Intake Farm Campsite sits just two miles away, making this an easy evening stroll or a gentle cycling jaunt. Glencote and Springfields are further out but still within reasonable striking distance. Spring and early summer are best - you'll catch more boat traffic and the towpath's actually pleasant to walk.

Bring sturdy shoes. The wharf can be muddy, and the canal path's not manicured. It's free to wander about, which keeps it honest. Worth the detour if you're already based nearby, but don't make a special journey.
