Friskney Flats

The Lincolnshire coastline hits you differently out here. Friskney Flats is where the land just... stops, dissolving into vast stretches of mudflat and saltmarsh that seem to go on forever. You're looking at the Wash - that enormous shallow bay between Norfolk and Lincolnshire - and it's genuinely humbling in a way the guidebooks don't quite capture.

What you actually get is a proper nature-watching spot. Birdwatchers come here because the flats are a feeding ground for everything from oystercatchers to avocets, depending on the season. You won't find theme parks or amusement arcades; this is quiet stuff. The walk along the sea wall gives you uninterrupted views across the mudflats, and the light at late afternoon is worth the journey alone. Low tide reveals more of the expanse; high tide can be dramatic if weather's turning.

It's free, and you can spend as little as an hour or make a proper half-day of it if you're into birds or photography. The nearest proper town is Skegness, about 10 miles south, so it works well as a break from the seafront bustle. Families with young children might find it a bit bleak - there's nothing to do except walk and look - but older kids who can appreciate a landscape and keen naturalists will rate it highly. Both Grange Farm Campsite and Riverside Caravan Park are under five miles away, making it an easy add-on to a coastal holiday. Go when you've got decent weather; this isn't a destination you want to visit in a downpour.
