Friends Wood

A proper woodland walk just inland from Dover, Friends Wood is the kind of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. Ancient trees, dense undergrowth, and narrow paths that feel genuinely separated from the coast road rush. The canopy does most of the work here - dappled light, birdsong, and enough quiet to actually hear yourself think.

It's compact enough to cover in 45 minutes to an hour, which makes it ideal for breaking up a day rather than building a morning around it. Families with young legs won't get restless, and it's straightforward enough that you don't need a detailed map. The woodland floor is soft underfoot when wet, muddy when recent rain's hit, so plan your footwear accordingly.

The real draw for most people will be the contrast to Dover's busier attractions. After tackling the castle or the cliffs, this is where you come to decompress. Walkers heading toward Turners Folly Field glamping site (just over six miles away) could easily work this into a morning before settling in for the evening.

Bring nothing, pay nothing, expect nothing fancy - and you'll come away grateful you went. It's not dramatic or showy. Just a slice of Kent woodland that does what woodlands do best: offer shelter and a bit of green quiet when you need it most. Best visited autumn through spring when the paths are clearest and the light's at its lowest angle.
