Askern Lake sits just outside Goole and has the feel of a proper working nature reserve - the kind of place where you'll spot actual birdwatchers with serious equipment rather than Instagram tourists. Friends of Askern Lake manages this modest but genuinely rewarding stretch of water, and it's free to visit.

What you get here is straightforward: a lake fringed with reed beds, open water for wildfowl, and enough paths to walk the perimeter without exhausting yourself. On a decent morning you'll see coots, mallards, herons if you're lucky, and in winter the visitor numbers tick up significantly. The birdwatching is the main draw - bring binoculars and you'll be occupied for a solid hour or two. Photographers do well here too, especially during golden hour.

It's not a destination that'll occupy a family all day, to be honest. Kids might manage 45 minutes before they're ready to move on, unless they're genuinely into spotting birds. But if you're camping at Between Rivers just down the road and fancy a morning walk with decent wildlife spotting potential, it fills the gap nicely. The site's volunteer-run ethos means it's well-maintained without feeling over-manicured.

Go early to avoid the midday glare on the water and for better bird activity. Spring and autumn migrations make it particularly worthwhile. Goole's only a few miles away if you need supplies or lunch afterward.
