Friars Meadow

You'll find Friars Meadow just outside Sudbury, a proper countryside spot that does exactly what it says on the tin - gives you somewhere to spread a blanket and eat lunch without the fuss of a formal venue. It's a meadow, essentially, with the kind of open space that feels proper nice on a warm afternoon. Not a manicured park with restaurants and play equipment; just grass, some breathing room, and a view that doesn't demand anything of you.

The appeal is straightforward. Families after a casual picnic will appreciate the lack of pretension, and walkers using the surrounding footpaths can stop here for a proper break. There's nothing to "do" in the attraction sense - that's rather the point. Bring a flask, some sandwiches, and sit for a bit.

If you're staying at one of the glamping spots nearby - Cranfield Retreat, Lake View Lodges, or The Huts at Woodthorpes are all within a few miles - Friars Meadow makes a decent anchor for a morning's outing before heading back for something more substantial. It works well as a free interlude between proper attractions rather than a destination in itself.

The meadow takes perhaps twenty minutes to explore properly, and realistically you'll stay as long as your picnic takes. Go on a dry day and you'll find it pleasant; go on a drizzly one and you'll understand why it's not everyone's idea of entertainment. Ideal if you want something low-key, less so if you need infrastructure or activities.
