The New Forest presses in around Friar's Coppice, though the forest itself - a mixed woodland of oak, beech and conifers - feels proper tucked away once you're among the trees. It's the kind of place you stumble upon rather than plan for, which is entirely its charm. The walking here is straightforward enough, with tracks threading through the canopy, and on a quiet day you'll likely spot ponies and deer picking their way between the undergrowth.

This works best for people who actually want to walk rather than simply take a photograph. Families with younger kids might find an hour or so sufficient before restlessness sets in, though older children who enjoy tracking wildlife and exploring will happily spend a half-day here. The paths vary in firmness - some sections can be boggy after rain, so proper footwear matters.

If you're based at Rookesbury Park or ScottsHaven, both within a few miles south towards Southampton, Friar's Coppice makes for an easy morning outing without the crowds you'd encounter at more famous New Forest spots. Glamping at Wallops Wood gives you similar proximity and arguably better comfort for base camp. The forest is free to access, as most New Forest woodland is, and there's no fixed visiting hours - turn up when suits you. Autumn looks best here, when the beech turns proper golden, though it's worth visiting whatever the season if you're in the area. Don't expect tea rooms or facilities. Just trees, quiet, and a genuine sense of being away from things.
