Fox Tor

The walk up Fox Tor takes about forty minutes from the car park near Launceston, and it's genuinely worth the effort. You're climbing onto Bodmin Moor proper here, so the landscape changes as you gain height - scrubby moorland gives way to something wilder, with granite outcrops appearing like natural furniture scattered across the slopes.

Once you're up there, the view opens right out across Cornwall. On a clear day you can see for miles. The tor itself is modest by dramatic standards - a rocky outcrop rather than a towering peak - but that's rather the point. It feels like a proper achievement without being punishing, and the whole experience has that authentic moor-walking feel that some peaks get wrong.

This works best for walkers who actually enjoy the walk itself, not just the destination. If you've got young kids, it's doable but the moorland can feel featureless to them, so factor in extra time and don't expect them to be glued to the views. History buffs won't find much - it's geology and landscape rather than archaeology.

Go early to avoid other people clogging the narrow paths, and check the weather first because mist rolls in fast and the moor becomes genuinely disorienting. Spring and early autumn are best - summer gets muddy with foot traffic.
