Fourteen Swallets #10

The Fourteen Swallets are a proper scramble into the limestone landscape near Ruthin - a chain of sinkholes and underground streams that disappear into the rock like nature's plumbing system gone mad. You're essentially pottering about in a landscape that's been carved by water over millennia, peering into holes where becks vanish underground and resurface again, sometimes a few hundred yards away.

This isn't a tourist cave with steps and handrails. It's raw geology, the sort of place where you need decent boots, a torch, and honestly, a bit of scrambling nerve. The ground's boggy in spots, the rock's slippery when wet - which it often is in North Wales - and you'll be clambering over moss-covered limestone. Walkers who like geology will be genuinely gripped. Kids can have a laugh splashing about, though younger ones might find it a bit much if the weather's been dodgy.

Allow a couple of hours if you're taking your time and actually trying to work out which stream goes where. The nearest town is Ruthin, a proper market place with actual character, so you can pair this with a nose around the shops and pubs. It's free to explore, though obviously you're doing so at your own risk on rough ground. Genuinely worth seeking out if you like your countryside a bit less polished.
