Fosters Field

The moment you step into Fosters Field, you're in proper Devon moorland - open grassland that rolls gently toward distant hills, with hardly a fence in sight. It's a nature reserve just outside Tavistock, and what makes it special is how accessible it feels compared to the bigger, more famous spots in Dartmoor.

You'll find mixed habitats here: grassland, scrub, and patches of woodland that attract birds and small mammals. It's the sort of place where you might spot a buzzard overhead or catch sight of rabbits bolting through the grass. The paths are straightforward, nothing demanding, which means families with younger kids or anyone after a gentle walk will get on fine. If you're seriously into birdwatching or plant identification, bring your guides - there's genuine ecological interest in the mix of species.

Allow an hour or so for a proper explore, though you could dash round in half that if you're pressed. There's no visitor centre or café, so come prepared. It's free to access, which is always welcome.

If you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots - Woodovis is less than two miles away, Sunnyside a bit further - Fosters Field makes a lovely morning or evening outing without much hassle. It won't blow your mind if you're after dramatic Dartmoor scenery, but it's genuine, quiet, and far less busy than the big-name reserves. Worth the detour if you're in the area.
